{"id":1678,"date":"2015-09-22T15:18:38","date_gmt":"2015-09-22T15:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ctfarmland.org\/site\/?p=1678"},"modified":"2015-09-22T15:18:38","modified_gmt":"2015-09-22T15:18:38","slug":"bilger-farm-preserved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ctfarmland.org\/site\/bilger-farm-preserved\/","title":{"rendered":"Bilger Farm Preserved!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Connecticut Farmland Trust (CFT) is pleased to announce the protection of Bilger Farm in Meriden, one of the last farms in the city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ctfarmland.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_1638.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1685 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/ctfarmland.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_1638-e1442934743566-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1638\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Owner Lucille Bilger, the last remaining Bilger in the family, moved to convey the farm\u2019s development rights to the state after the fatal tractor accident of her 82-year old brother David in 2010. \u201cMy family has operated and loved our farm for a number of generations and have always wished to have it preserved as a farm for future generations as well,\u201d she said. \u201cOver the years my brothers and I have turned down offers from developers, hoping that we could ultimately preserve the farm.\u201d While once a dairy farm, Bilger Farm is now used to grow hay for livestock support. The 76-acre farm includes a dairy barn, a colonial-style house built circa 1880, and a garage.<\/p>\n<p>CFT Executive Director Elisabeth Moore said, \u201cIt is one of the last farms in Meriden and a very desirable location.
